At many points during our lives we often find ourselves in need of inspiration to fortify our resolve and courage. Sometimes however, finding inspiration in itself isn’t enough, courage is also required to move forward in the face of uncertainty. Inspiration comes in many forms, but its normally associated with being mentally stimulated to do or feel something, especially to do something creative.
As a “creative”, I often find myself scouring the internet in search of inspiration and have joined many online forums to further my learning and to develop a network of “like minded” people. The upsides to social media are huge, however, the amount of content that’s available and constantly appearing in our “newsfeed” can sometimes drown out “your own voice” and without realising it you no longer possess your own voice, but the voice of the “collective”. When this happens confidence and self belief can spiral downwards, leading to second guessing of your thoughts and decisions, worse still, you stop listening to your inner voice and “follow the crowd” out of comfort and keeping “it safe”. But sometimes playing it safe isn’t an option.
So why do I need “inspiration and courage”?
I’m in the final stages of a re-branding my wedding photography business, the icing on the cake being the designing of logo. I requested the help of family and friends (via social media) to help me choose designers and designs that would move through to the final round final round and ultimately the final design for my logo. I was a little surprised by my reaction to the design that received the greatest scores. Why? The design was right on brief, but to my mind it was too obvious. My inner voice saying “be bold and be different” and “be true to yourself”.
Its a human condition that we get nervous and start second guessing ourselves when we’re about to make a big decision (ask anyone about to buy their 1st house, a bride of groom on the morning of their wedding, the couple who have just made a decision to become parents) and will try and find ways to justify our decisions. The decision to choose a logo design comes on the back of nearly three years of work, so yes I’m a little nervous!
During the many hours I spent trawling through Pinterest collecting material for my mood board, I stumbled across this inspirational quote, which I have since revisited; and “Yes” it did indeed have the desired effect on me. Read on, hopefully you yourself may find meaning within this quote;
“If you follow the crowd, you will likely get no further than the crowd. If you walk alone, you’re likely to end up in places no one has ever been before. Being an achiever is not without its difficulties, for peculiarity breeds contempt. The unfortunate thing about being ahead of your time is that when people finally realize you were right, they’ll simply say it was obvious to everyone all along. You have two choices in life. You can dissolve into the main stream, or you can choose to become an achiever and be distinct. To be distinct, you must be different. To be different, you must strive to be what no else but you can be.”
Having been duly inspired by this quote, my courage has also been bolstered… a decision has been made to follow my inner voice and I’m pretty excited by that decision, to see how it plays out, watch this space …. I’m going to close with an image that I think sums up this post; in spite of my daughter being told not to climb too high in this tree, she knew what her goal was… check out her right hand…
